More Clues with Examples:

  • Blue: Plural animals that use the same singular and plural form – Some animal names remain the same whether singular or plural. For example, “deer” is both singular and plural, as are “sheep,” “shrimp,” and “squid.”

  • Green: German words – These are common words borrowed from the German language. For example, “Kinder” means children in German, “angst” refers to fear or anxiety, “die” (pronounced 'dee' in German) means 'the,' and “worst” refers to sausage, as in bratwurst.

  • Purple: Plural words that are very different from their singular forms – These words drastically change when pluralized. “Ox” becomes “oxen,” “mouse” becomes “mice,” “louse” becomes “lice,” and “die” (a singular dice) becomes “dice.”

First Connection: Words Related to Uniqueness

I started by identifying words that described something special or distinct. “Unique” stood out right away, along with “special” and “remarkable.” That left “singular” as the last piece, making up the yellow category of “Words related to uniqueness.”

Second Connection: German Words

Next, I noticed a few words with a German origin. “Kinder” reminded me of ‘Kindergarten,’ which comes from German. “Angst” is commonly used in English to describe anxiety but has German roots. “Die” is a definite article in German, and “wurst” refers to sausage, like in ‘bratwurst.’ That completed the green category of “German words.”

Third Connection: Plural Animals That Use the Same Singular and Plural Form

I originally suspected this connection but struggled to get the right combination. “Deer,” “sheep,” “shrimp,” and “squid” all have identical singular and plural forms. That made up the blue category of “Plural animals with unchanged singular and plural forms.”

Fourth Connection: Plural Words That Are Very Different from Their Singular Forms

This one tripped me up for a while! “Ox” becomes “oxen,” “mouse” turns into “mice,” “louse” becomes “lice,” and “die” (the singular of dice) becomes “dice.” That completed the purple category of “Plural words that are very different from their singular forms.”

Final Thoughts

Wow, today’s puzzle really threw me for a loop! I got stuck on the plural animals and swapped out the wrong words, which cost me a few tries. The trickiest part for me was recognizing the German words category—I wasn’t even close at first!

How did you do on today’s puzzle? Did you struggle with the same categories as I did? Let me know in the comments!

Thanks for playing along, and I’ll see you tomorrow for another round of Connections!
